Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the former president who is the most expensive in the budget of the state, with 2.5 million euros a year, ahead of Nicolas Sarkozy (2.2 million) and Jacques Chirac (1.5 million), according to a new assessment of PS deputy René Dosière from departmental data.

“Over six million euros per year, the total cost to be borne by the State of former presidents, “wrote on his blog René Dosière, longtime Elysée budget specialist. This budget does not include the monthly salary of former presidents (about 6,000 euros) or the monthly pay of a member of the Constitutional Council (12,000 euros) that VGE is the only one touch.

Former presidents have a furnished corporate apartment in whose service are assigned two people. According to a Matignon response of 13 January to a written question from René Dosière, operating expenses (mainly leases apartments) accounted in 2014 an expenditure of 343,307 euros for VGE, 309,342 euros to 242,816 euros and Nicolas Sarkozy to Jacques Chirac. The MP proposes that expenses for former presidents are limited to five years

In addition, Eric Dosière still awaits response of the Ministry of Interior on the cost of securing the homes of former heads of state. To reduce this “high level of spending,” the MP proposes several tracks, including a decree provides for the expenses incurred by the state. They “should be limited to a period of 5 years” and “exclusive of any private compensation – with the exception of intellectual activities (eg books) – and a leading political activity.”
